Acknowledge Errors:
The first thing do, is to recognize the lesson that is earned after making a mistake. This will set them on the path of learning. Often when we make a mistake we feel bad and develop self-guilt. This will get you a clear perspective about the actual board paper. 

Make A Plan:
Always try and help them to prepare a plan or some kind of schedule. This will make them mature enough to sort things out by themselves. Making a schedule is necessary because in times of preparation season they often get baffled. Due to the pressure of exams, they lose track of the schedule and face some harsh consequences. Make sure to take help from solved past papers of the relative board and the syllabus. These papers will make it clear to you about how much time would you need for a specific chapter. 

Make It Harder To Mess Up.
If you have been through the past papers and you have prepared from the solved old papers. You can easily make sure about the low probability of things going south. What happens is that these old papers make your students mature enough to sort out things by themselves. This makes it very difficult for them to make a mistake.
